Why working at Disney is a unique opportunity

After reading so much recently about the employment experience of Disneyland Resort cast members, I wanted to share my story. The specifics are unique to me, but the broader point is true for so many of us — working at Disney is a unique opportunity.
I’m currently a production manager in attractions, but this was not part of my plan when I started 12 years ago. This was a summer job, and that’s where my story begins.
Upon graduating college in Northern California, I moved to Orange County ready to put my degree to use, and hired into Disneyland while looking for jobs that would set me on my desired career path. I chose Disneyland because of my fond childhood memories. When I started, I quickly realized I could pad my paycheck by volunteering to work longer shifts, and even extra days if I wanted. That flexibility was helping me pay back my student loan quicker than I had anticipated. Were there long days? Did I skip events with friends that I would have loved to attend? Absolutely. But I genuinely loved my job. I was getting much more than a paycheck at Disneyland. I was putting smiles on people’s faces all day. I was learning invaluable skills and had access to people and resources that were helping me grow as an individual. As summer turned to fall, I didn’t want to leave.
I continued putting in the time, working hard, learning from those around me, and eventually became a working lead, supervising retail stores. I made great friends during that time who are now life-long companions. We all loved what we were doing and were always looking for opportunities to grow and advance in the company. From classes at the Disney University to roles in other areas of the resort, we knew our career options with Disney were vast. I ultimately landed a role with the resort’s internal communications team, while a few of my other friends moved on to positions in guest relations — and one would eventually work for Marvel. To top it all off, it was in this role that I met a beautiful cast member who I’m now lucky enough to call my wife.
As I continued my Disney journey, I took advantage of the company’s college reimbursement program to further my education, earning an MBA from Chapman University that I would never have been able to afford on my own. I also went through Disney’s leader training, where I expanded and strengthened my leadership skills. Now that Disney had helped arm me with my MBA and additional development as a leader, I returned to a role in the park as a manager in attractions, where I was able to help other cast members find their way at the resort just as so many had helped me.
I’ve heard the stories from cast about coming to work here from far away because this is a special place, and making sacrifices in time, distance or living situations because they love their jobs. They want to be a part of the magic just like I did. I take great pride in relating to their stories and sharing my own journey, so they know there’s a path, there are resources and there are people to help get them where they want to be.
I love my job … I am in charge of Peter Pan’s Flight! I have worked very hard over the last 12 years and Disney has given me so much more than I could have ever imagined. Did I mention I have the best wife ever? Thanks, Disneyland.
Michael Estes is attractions north production manager at Disneyland Resort.

32-Year-Old Rookie Andre Ingram Shines in First NBA Game After 10 Years in G League

Here's a real-life NBA story that sounds like it's straight from a Hollywood script.

Andre Ingram is a gray-haired 32-year-old basketball player who has been grinding it out in the NBA's developmental G League for the past 10 years—384 games to be exact.

He says he fully expected to finish his career in the league without ever getting called up to the NBA, but that changed this week. The injury-plagued Los Angeles Lakers signed him for the final two games of the season on Monday.

At the time this article was written, Ingram was a perfect three-for-three from the field and lead the Lakers with 11 points as they headed into halftime. Fans in the Staples Center were even heard chanting "MVP!"after he made the shots. What a story.

Kendrick Lamar Vocals Meet Dr. Dre Beats on 'The DAMN. Chronic' Mashup

With Dr. Dre apparently still working hard on his long-fabled Detox album, some of his greatest productions are now being put to good use by DJ Critical Hype, who paired some of the rap mogul’s legendary beats to an assortment of classic Kendrick Lamar verses. Aptly titled The Damn. Chronic, the mashup project not only captures the aesthetic and culture of the city that produced two of the greatest stars in hip-hop but also provides a fresh new perspective on the storied catalogs of the Compton duo.

In speaking with Pigeons and Planes about the release, DJ Critical Hype explains, “I was determined to make it work, but the truth is it wasn’t easy,” while also adding, “I had to dig deep and make a capellas for about 60 to 70 Kendrick songs and try and find stuff I was happy with.”

Disneyland's Main Street U.S.A Refurbishment is Complete!

Attention, Disneyland fans! Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland Resort has been undergoing refurbishment for the past three months, and it is finally complete.

The horse-drawn streetcar track itself was entirely repaved and the horses are back in action, making their usual rounds up and down the street.

According to the OC Register, Disneyland has 18 horses that pull 24 passengers around a 3,500 foot loop, which comes out to about two-thirds of a mile. This refurbishment was done in order to make the track safer in a few different ways. It's not only safer for park-goers to walk on, but it's also better for the horses' hooves. They added 50,000 bricks to the track!

This marks just one of the many refurbishments and new improvements coming to the Disneyland Resort. The original Anaheim theme park along with California Adventure is currently gearing up for Pixar Fest, starting April 13.

Pixar Fest will feature a firework spectacular called "Together Forever," which will be based around plenty of the Disney•Pixar classics and new favorites. Coco, Inside Out, Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and more are confirmed to be included in this magical new show. They will also be selling Disney•Pixar themed treats such as a Toy Story alien macaron and a Finding Dory cake pop.

Disney fans have another thing to be excited about — a fan-favorite parade called Paint The Night is making its return! It originally ran from 2015 to 2017 in the Disneyland Resort, but this time around it will be taking place in Disney's California Adventure! They even added an Incredibles float considering the long-awaited Incredibles 2 comes out on June 15.

DMX Sentenced to 1 Year in Prison

DMX has been in and out of jail throughout his career. Only two months after being sent behind bars for violating bail conditions related to failed drug tests, X has just been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

TMZ reports that prosecutors were originally aiming for a five-year sentence, but the judge ultimately decided on giving the rapper one-year in the slammer plus three years of supervised release. In November of last year, DMX pled guilty to one count of tax evasion. X was originally facing 44 years in jail and 14 counts for allegedly taking part in a “multi-year scheme.” He reportedly evaded $1.7 million USD in tax payments from the IRS.

DMX initially pled not guilty and paid half a million USD to be released on bail. He then pled guilty to one count in November as part of a deal with authorities — this prevented him from facing up facing four decades in prison.

His lawyer, Murray Richman, played the artist’s music video for “Slippin’” during his trial in the NYC courtroom to recount the rapper’s life and hardships.

Disneyland Is Opening a Real-Life Pizza Planet From ‘Toy Story’

Disneyland is reportedly opening a real-life version of Toy Story’s Pizza Planet, where Buzz Lightyear and Woody encounter the aliens who worship “The Claw” machine, according to Delish.

That space-themed arcade restaurant will be coming to California’s Tomorrowland theme park this April, and will transform the current Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port into “Alien’s Pizza Planet — A Better Place,” reports, Disney News Today.

Also, if you were wondering why that will be the restaurant’s full name, it refers to the Little Green Men’s mantra about them going to “a better place” when they’re captured by the claw machine.

The restaurant is slated to open on Friday, April 13 just in time for kick-off of Pixar Fest. For additional details, be sure to read the full story on Delish.

Louis Vuitton Crowns Virgil Abloh as Its New Menswear Designer

In breaking news, French luxury house Louis Vuitton has just named Virgil Abloh as its new artistic director of menswear, replacing Kim Jones who announced his departure just last week.

Abloh’s new gig at LV will make him one of the few black designers at the top of a French heritage house, followed by Olivier Rousteing at Balmain and Ozwald Boateng, who was the designer for Givenchy menswear from 2003 to 2007. According to The New York Times, Abloh will relocate his family to Paris to fulfill his new role.

Before today’s official announcement, it was rumored Abloh would take over Jones’ spot. On the same day as his announcement to leave Louis Vuitton, Kim Jones posted a pair of Off-White™ x Air Jordan 1 sneakers, signed by Abloh himself, with the caption “Thanks Virgil, BIG LOVE.” Abloh will show his first collection for Louis Vuitton during Paris Men’s Fashion Week in June.

Abloh stated:

“I feel elated. This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.”

THE HUNDREDS LOS ANGELES

When people open shops, they don’t think about how to close them. Of course not. That’s like planning a break-up on the first date. But, knowing when, why, and how to shutter a store is just as important as the grand opening.
For The Hundreds, our flagship stores have played an indispensable role in telling the story, a reflection of who we were at each stage of the process. We built our first store in the Fairfax District when we were 26-year-old kids with an unknown T-shirt brand, naive and bright-eyed. Over a decade later, we asked ourselves, “If we were to build a store today, how would it look and perform?” With the mounting success of our online shop and wholesale business, we also took a hard look at brick-and-mortar’s purpose. Is it a venue to experience the brand? Is it a communal grounds? Does it drive sales or marketing or both? We wiped our palate clean and started with a blank slate. In 2018, The Hundreds deserves a home that encapsulates 15 years of our history as well as set us up for the next 15 years…
We searched for a fresh start and then it came knocking. Literally next door. All the way back in 2005 when we first moved into our office on Rosewood Ave., Ben and I fantasized about opening our first store in the corner spot. But then, SLB moved in, and then the keys passed to RVCA. We didn’t mind establishing our retail presence in that Rosewood alley. Business, like life, is all about timing, and we weren’t ready for the main stage. But then, our landlord called and told us the space was ours to take. 501 N Fairfax. It was hard to let go of the past, but it was time to start writing the next chapter. Today, we open The Hundreds Los Angeles in its rightful place on the corner of Fairfax and Rosewood. I invite you all to come be a part of The Hundreds history—and future.

- Bobby Hundreds

LA's Fairfax District is a streetwear capital, but here's Bobby Hundreds' historical perspective from where he stands on the corner of Rosewood Ave. From The Hundreds' first office, to the original RSWD store, to the new THLA location at 501 N. Fairfax Ave., we have finally caught up to our future.

Some Disneyland Employees Struggle To Pay For Food, Shelter, Survey Finds

A new survey of union employees at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., has found that more than two-thirds of respondents say they are food insecure at the resort advertised as the "happiest place on Earth."

Disneyland employs about 30,000 people, according to the company. The surveyors say they heard from about 5,000 employees representing nine unions at Disneyland. One in ten reported that they have been homeless in the last two years, or haven't had their own place to sleep. Nearly three quarters say they don't bring in enough money to cover their monthly basic expenses.

Unions representing park staff are in the middle of, or about to start, negotiations with management. The survey was underwritten by The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions, a group of unions that work in Disneyland.

"While we recognize that socio-economic challenges exist for many people living in Southern California, we take pride in our employment experience," Disneyland spokesperson Suzi Brown said in a statement to NPR.

She described the report as an "inaccurate and unscientific survey" and questioned its methodology and motivations. Disney claims that the survey did not use proper controls about who could take it. However, Occidental College professor Peter Dreier, who was involved in developing the methodology, described that as "totally wrong" because the survey required employee ID numbers that were checked for duplication.

"Rather than deal with the issues we identified in the report — low wages, inadequate health insurance, lack of any day care, food insecurity, lack of respect, etc — Disney is desperately trying to deflect attention by criticizing the methods," Dreier said in an email to NPR.

Credit: Jae C. Hong/AP

While the respondents comprised about one in six of the park employees, it's not clear how the results would be different for the broader staff. The company says that the average annual wage for full-time hourly staff last year was about $37,000, and that it has recently introduced an educational program for its hourly workforce.

The park's profits are rising. Park revenues last quarter "increased 13% to $5.2 billion," according to the company. Prices are rising for tickets, food and merchandise, and attendance is growing, according to the company. The union report states that Disney's total profit increased by more than 500 percent in 2017 dollars from 2000 to 2017.

Still, the average hourly wages for park employees have been decreasing for more than 15 years, according to the survey.

"The average hourly wage for Disneyland Resort workers in real dollars dropped 15% from 2000 to 2017, from $15.80 to $13.36," the report states. Disneyland said it was still reviewing the specific numbers in the report.

"I've been 29 years with Disney. I only get $15.70 an hour," an unnamed full-time concierge who is living with a friend told the surveyors. "Sometimes I go without food."

"The pay is so poor I worry every month if I'll be living in my car again or not be able to pay my car payment and live in the streets," said another full-time worker.

California's statewide minimum wage is $11 at companies with 26 or more people on the payroll and $10.50 at smaller employers. It's set to increase annually, reaching $15 for all employers by 2013.

But even that is not a "living wage" in California, according to a recent report from the California Budget & Policy Center. Here's The Orange County Register on that report's findings:

"Taking into account housing, food, child care, transportation, medical needs, and basics such as clothing, housekeeping supplies and telephone service, along with income and payroll taxes, a California family of four with two working parents needs annual earnings of $75,952 on average to afford basic necessities.
"This is equivalent to each working parent having a full-time job that pays $18.26 an hour. A family with only one working parent would need to earn $28.53 an hour to make ends meet, the report estimates."

The union survey shows that the Disney workforce is getting older, with 18 percent at age 55 or older. "The conception of Disneyland Resort workers as young people with few financial realities does not match reality," says the report.

At the same time, some employees reported that the erratic work hours make it more difficult to hold down a second job. About one in four employees surveyed say they have the same schedule every week.

Chris Tucker Confirms 'Rush Hour 4' Is Happening

Late last year while visiting the The Cruz Show, actor and stuntman Jackie Chan confirmed that Rush Hour 4was in the works, however only Chris Tucker was left to approve the next chapter.

Now Tucker has confirmed the project himself during an appearance on ESPN’s podcast The Plug. During the show Tucker was asked if he and Jackie Chan would ever team up again, more specifically for the Rush Hour franchise, to which Tucker replied, “It’s happening. This is gonna be the rush of all rushes.” Tucker continued, “Jackie is ready and we want to do this so that people don’t ever forget it.”

Chan himself stated last year, “For the last seven years, we’ve been turn[ing] down, turn[ing] down the script. But yesterday, we agreed.” At the time, Chan said Tucker was still undecided. Keep it locked here for more details when they surface. Though the month has almost come to an end, check out the best films and TV shows for February.
